JOB SUMMARY:

OES seeks curious, creative, and self-reflective full time Summer Lead Educators to work collaboratively with partner educators to design, propose and lead week long inquiry based day camp classes in the fields of STEM, Arts, Athletics and Movement, and Outdoor education. Classes are developed for student campers in grades Pre K, Kindergarten-1st, 2nd-3rd, or 4th-5th grades.

In the afternoon (2:30-4) educators put on their specialist hats and lead rotating pre-planned enrichments or inquiry based workshops.

The Summer Educator promotes and models finding joy through curiosity, wonder, and the exploration of ideas and concepts while fostering an appreciation for lifelong learning through the safe utilization of both indoor and outdoor classroom spaces. Teacher collaboration is crucial to support camp classes that are created to: expand inquiry and fun; support social, emotional, and mental health of students; and support a love for learning and community. In addition to the qualifications detailed below, the successful summer camp class teacher possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, is very flexible, good humored, has strong organizational skills, and the ability to support and model the Summer at OES Philosophy and Core Values.

Summer at OES continually refines its practices of inclusive teaching and community. The ideal colleague would contribute substantially to that effort, in terms of both curriculum and pedagogy. Strong candidates, are learners as much as knowers and will bring an innovative and bright energetic spirit to program spaces, constantly seeking ways to positively impact student campers whether it is their 1st or 20th day of the Summer season. They will bring a strong facility with technology and demonstrate a flexible mindset that enriches collaboration, emergent teaching practices, and design thinking. Most importantly, they will see student campers as budding scholars, creators, and engaged human beings regardless of class content knowledge and/or ability.

This is a full time two-week minimum seasonal position that starts with asynchronous training June 1st, 2025, and with paid preparatory expectations starting upon acceptance of camp class proposal/educator position in January 2025.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • With your co-educator and/or Summer Programs Admin team, co-develop and implement intellectually challenging and joyfully creative camps with developmentally appropriate, research-based practices, and a strong, inquiry-based and differentiated curriculum within the summer framework.
  • Develop a safe, nurturing, inclusive, equitable, and exciting summer environment conducive to camp classes of up to 20 students - average 15-18.
  • A Summer at OES Educator in their camp class:
    • Creates, communicates, and maintains clear, consistent and appropriate learning objectives and expectations.
    • Seeks to understand, value, and respond to each student camper and their emerging needs.
    • Differentiates instruction and facilitation.
    • Believes in each person's potential for growth.
    • Experiments with teaching strategies within their team.
    • Maintains and models high standards for student camper behavior in and out of the classroom.
    • Develops a familiarity with a framework for understanding students' individual strengths, affinities, and challenges.
  • Seeks and constructively uses professional feedback.
  • Arrives on time and are fully present at the summer program during all assigned hours with your camper students.
  • Promotes and models the responsible, safe, and healthy use of equipment, materials, and environment.
  • Communicates responsibly and professionally with colleagues, families, and students.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues in a spirit of openness and cooperation.
  • Demonstrates kindness, enthusiasm, and a passion for teaching.
  • Participates fully in the life of the Summer at OES by: attending and participating in camp gatherings, helping to supervise outdoor and indoor playspaces, working together during our lunch times in service and cleaning, and leading or offering engaged assistance during enrichment times.
  • Other supporting duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A love for kids.
  • BA/BS in relevant discipline OR equivalent experience in teaching subjects.
  • 1-5 years of classroom, auxiliary, or enrichment teaching/facilitating experience
  • Intercultural competence, ability to teach diverse groups of students effectively; ability to interact appropriately with a diverse array of students, coworkers, family members
  • Ability to pass a background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proof of prior work experience in a summer camp/summer school setting, school setting - public and/or independent school.
  • Previous team teaching experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to learn and grow professionally throughout the summer while remaining flexible with the flow of summer programming.
  • Ability to facilitate and supervise a group of 15-30 camper students with support.
  • Interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate and maintain collegial relations with colleagues and support a healthy work culture.
  • Excellent and open communication skills to interact with students, families, colleagues and supervisors.
  • To have fun, be respectful, be responsible, and to try new things.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Camp is split between classroom, playground, and outdoor campus spaces across 59 acres.
  • Mobility sufficient to move about the campus and to assure the safety of young children.
  • Ability to see, hear, and speak to interact with students, parents, and groups of individuals
